This weekend’s Assen MotoGP grid will be even ‘lighter’ with the confirmed news that Hiroshi Aoyama will not be racing. Aoyama fractured his vertebra in the highside that he had in the Sunday warm-up for the British GP.

Currently it is not clear when he will be race fit – but it is rumoured that he could be out of action for up to 3 months.

Aoyama’s absence means that only 15 MotoGP bikes will be competing at Assen (Valentino Rossi remains out with a broken leg), which is a poor state of affairs for the premier class and will likely heap more pressure on Dorna to find ways to increase the grid sizes and make it easier and more affordable to compete in the series.

**UPDATE**
The Interwetten Honda MotoGP Team has announced that Kousuke Akiyoshi, Honda’s test rider, will replace Hiroshi Aoyama in the Assen and Barcelona GPs.
