YAKINTHIA FESTIVAL IN ANOGIA, CRETE 24 JULY - 2 AUGUST 2009

THE SHEPHERDS OF THE MEDITERRANEAN
AT “YAKINTHIA 2009”

24 July - 2 August 2009

Crete, calls for the first time ever in celebration
of «Yakinthia Cultural Events”
from 24 July to 2 August 2009
the shepherds of the Mediterranean.

A. The Yakinthia Festival
"Y archee ytone poly mikree ky afantee dihos allo /
ma to mikro me ton kaero eginike megalo"

From the first time presenting Yakinthia so far, the response of the audience was impressive. Hundreds of artists, scientists, journalists and thousands of students, people of all ages, from all over Greece and abroad, participate and attend the cultural events of Yakinthia. This fact has recognized and put Yakintheia into the class of the most important institutions of cultural creation in our country as a reference for Mediterranean cultural exchange.

B. The Idea

The Mediterranean agricultural societies had always kept a knowledge, skills, traditions, rituals of great cultural wealth. The territories were often shelter for minorities and have included sacred places of high symbolic value. Today this way of life is threatened on a global scale from radical transformation or abandonment.

Ludovikos of Anogia speaks in its own way about stockbreeding on Crete.
"The domed buildings of the Late Minoan period with only stones as material, the MITATA tell the story of the shepherds from the time of Minos. The pastoral life was always the jewel of Mount Ida (Psiloritis).
Men taciturn, tough, with swords eyes, highlighted the culture of stone. Women who travel, waiting, weavers with the look of spring in their eyes. Homeric images which have not changed since then because from the beginning they found their value. The Koures (the shearing of sheep), the Xegyalismata (the arrival of spring on Mount Psiloritis) still are the shepherds celebrations where everyone comes to help and share in the yard of friendship."

Stockbreeding,
. It represents the modern world one of the major geo-cultural groups (and other large groups of rural, industrial, commercial activities etc.) ,

. Developed into a permanent interaction between man and nature. Over time it has produced not only viable (sustainable) ecosystems, but also a remarkable culture of value,

. It presents a large variety of uses of the natural environment
.

The activities of agricultural systems and the landscapes - trails, buildings, drinking troughs, terraces, etc.-must find a way out between the «Tourist museum poetry» and absolute Forgetting, to enable them to maintain their traditional values and to make them economically viable in the modern world.

The idea of this year's tribute to the shepherds of the Mediterranean has its origin from the most pressing need for giving the life, work, culture and art of the shepherds, the importance and understanding it deserves.

C. Guests
