In reference to the name day of St. Yakinthos, the protector of the feelings and the young, the festival took place on July 2nd, 3rd and 4th in Anogia. The evants began with an exhibition of "Toys from the times of War and Occupation" from the collection Benakis with support from the state gallery "LEFTERIS KANAKAKIS" from Rethymnon under the leadership of Maria Argyriadi. |

On Friday,
July 2nd in the amphitheater NIKOS XYLOURIS an evening of the "old" Greek
cinema took place to honor Giorgos Kontogiannis (Safirogiorgis), the old
cinema owner of the village.
The group "OKTAVA" played well known Greek film melodies, accompanying the singers Anastasia Moutsatsou, Andreas Karakotas, Sophia Papazoglou, Mariastella Tsanoudaki and Dimitris Yfantis. After this event, we met on Meidani sqare drinking Raki and eating traditional food made by the women of the village. The "open evening" lasted until next morning. LOcal musicians played all night just for fun. The main event on Saturday, July 3rd at the mountain theater Yakinthos to the light of oil lamps began with a farmer woman telling a fairy tale. The rest of the evening
was dedicated to the Mother as institution and human being. We heard performances
by famous Greek singers like Nikos Xydakis, Loudovikos of Anogia, Anastasia
Moutsatsou, Nikos Ziogalas, the Duo ANEMOS, Dimitris Yfantis, Sophia Papazoglou,
the group OMADIKI APODRASI and Andreas Karakotas.
On Sunday, 4th of July the YAKINTHIA Festival 1999 closed at the amphitheater NIKOS XYLOURIS with dances performed by the Lykio Ellinidon and other groups under Panagiotis Tsagalidis. |

At
the end of the evening (if there is such a thing) we had usual crown gathering
at Meidani square. (Again chance played the main role here. It was a beautiful
evening for everyone.)
